GHANA POST GPS – A CATALYST TO THE INDIGENOUS TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY

On the 19th of October, NANA ADDO DANQUAH AKUFFO ADDO, His Excellency the president of the republic of Ghana launched the national digital addressing system called GhanaPost GPS describing it as a move ever closer to realizing the vision of formalizing the country’s economy.
So I ask how will this mobile application affect the local transportation industry. It has been a challenge for most commuters to give commercial drivers the exact route and location to their destinations which brings disputes in charging of transportation fares.
Critics have said that Google map already exist and even the app incorporates Google map in its operation and AsaaseGps operates similarly. Ghana Post GPS generates specific codes with region and districts which is specifically for our setting plus the coordinates.
To every initiative there will be challenges so as to the maximum benefit of this app in the transport industry. A major challenge will be the inability of some indigenous drivers to operate an android or IOS powered device. So downloading the application and using it affectively will be a hurdle.
Also most traders use feature phones popularly called “yam” and those who have smart phones hardly knows how to operate such sophisticated applications. Therefore generating their coordinates to save them give to commercial drivers will be another challenge.
Notwithstanding, a greater number of the youth are technology savvy and it will be easy for them to use it. This means they can give accurate directions to commercial drivers.

This also means courier and parcel delivery services will get to know specific districts and area to do their delivery since everyone will generate their postcodes and will lead to better segregation of parcels.
For the government to realize its intention for this technologically move, education should be intensified and reach to the locals.
